Terrance Mckenna was famous for, amongst so many things, several different renditions of this quote:
“[If you want to talk to God,] take five dried grams of psilocybin mushrooms on an empty stomach, in silent darkness, and see what happens.”
While “5 grams” may sound like an accurately measured “dose”, what kind of psilocybin mushrooms were they? Golden Teachers, some APE variety, Psilocybe cyanescens, or were they psilocybin mushrooms at all…
Assuming you are dealing with psilocybin mushrooms, there can a 3-4x variance from the weakest Cubes to the strongest P.Cyanescens.
One could argue that for macro-dosing it’s not huge deal because you’re gonna be “trippin ballz” either way. With micro-dosing, on the other hand, this could very easily be the difference between a proper, non-perceptual, micro-dose and an “oh shit I have a meeting to go to and I’m trippin ballz” type of experience.
While surprises can be fun, Matt and I wanted to be as scientific as possible through out this whole endeavor so we established the following protocol for handling the psilocybin containing mushrooms which we grow in our test batches.
- Harvest: Immediately after harvesting fruits, clean, quarter, and dry them. Quartering helps them to dry more quickly and consistently.
- Store: Bag up the fruit with a resealable bag, removing as much air as possible, and then store in a cool dry place until you want to process them.
- Homogenize: Mix up all the dried mushrooms, then pulverize them, in batches if needed, and then stir/shake/whatever the powdered results so it is thoroughly homogenized. ( I like a 1 quart wide-mouth jar with a lid for the mixing part).
- Sample Analysis: Send a sample over to Caleb and team at Tryptomics for testing with a mass spectrometer and other cool nerd tools. From this testing you end up with a measure of how much psilocybin (see my reply below for more info on this) there is in the batch on a percent of weight basis. With this number in hand you can give yourself extremely accurate doses and remove the guesswork.
- Encapsulate: With the potency in hand we figure out how much dried mushroom material should be in a microdose and then make capsules with exactly that much powered mushrooms in them. We will also make capsules for macro-dosing where we just fill them up with 500mg and then a person can take as many of those as they want knowing exactly how much psilocybin is in each one. Encapsulating also extends the shelf life of the medicine by sealing off the medicine from moisture and oxidation.
With all of that said, here is the CA (Certificate of Analysis) from Tryptomics for our summer batch.
